Professional-level scuba instructor training has officially returned to Grand Cayman through a new partnership with Living the Dream Divers, bringing the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) back to one of the Caribbean’s premier diving destinations.
And for the upcoming October IDC, there may be something extra exciting waiting after the course finishes… think tiger sharks. Contact Kai at kai@diveinstructor.net for details.
After several years without a full PADI IDC program on the island, it was fantastic to once again offer instructor training in Grand Cayman. The latest course welcomed a diverse group of candidates, including a dive centre owner, a medical doctor, a university student, and a Divemaster who completed her entire progression with Living the Dream Divers — from Open Water Diver all the way to Instructor level.
Flexible Learning Before You Arrive
One of the key benefits of this IDC program is its blended learning approach. Before travelling to the Cayman Islands, candidates participated in eight live Zoom training sessions, each lasting approximately three hours. Completing much of the academic development online gives future instructors the flexibility to continue working and managing family commitments before arriving for the practical phase of the course.
Following the online sessions, candidates travelled to Grand Cayman for 10 days of intensive hands-on instructor preparation in warm Caribbean waters.
Real-World Professional Dive Training
The practical section of the IDC focuses on developing confident, capable dive professionals. Throughout the program, candidates refine demonstration-quality dive skills, practice confined and open water teaching presentations, complete rescue workshops, and learn how to effectively teach future divers.
Training in Grand Cayman adds another dimension to the experience. Calm conditions, excellent visibility, and consistently warm water create an ideal environment for professional-level scuba education. It’s easy to understand why Grand Cayman continues to rank among the world’s best destinations for dive training.
Specialty Instructor Certifications Included
As part of the program, candidates also earned five PADI Specialty Instructor ratings, helping accelerate their path toward the Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) qualification:
-
- Enriched Air (Nitrox) Instructor
-
- Deep Diver Instructor
-
- Wreck Diver Instructor
-
- Boat Diver Instructor
-
- Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor
These additional certifications provide newly qualified instructors with a broader teaching portfolio and improve employment opportunities within the dive industry.
Diving the Famous USS Kittiwake

One of the standout moments of the IDC is the Wreck Specialty Instructor training conducted on the USS Kittiwake.
Originally built in 1945 as a United States Navy submarine rescue vessel, the Kittiwake was intentionally sunk off Seven Mile Beach in 2011 to create an artificial reef and recreational dive attraction. Today, the wreck is covered in marine life and features spacious swim-throughs, easy penetration areas, and visibility that regularly exceeds 30 metres.
For IDC candidates pursuing wreck instructor certification, it provides an exceptional real-world training environment and an unforgettable diving experience.
Easy Access from North America and Europe
Another major advantage of hosting the IDC in Grand Cayman is the island’s accessibility. Direct international flights operate from numerous cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe, making travel straightforward and convenient for candidates arriving from overseas or North America alike.
October IDC Program Coming Soon
The next PADI IDC in Grand Cayman is scheduled for October, and there may be an unforgettable shark diving experience included afterward for those interested.
If you’ve ever wanted to become a PADI Instructor while diving warm tropical water, exploring iconic wrecks, and training in a relaxed yet highly professional setting, Grand Cayman offers the perfect combination of world-class diving and instructor education.
